Marriott, Hilton Announce Penalty for Last-Minute Cancellations

Effective Jan. 1, Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide will stiffen the penalty for last-minute reservation cancellations, The New York Times reports. Customers who fail to cancel their reservation by the day before their scheduled arrival will be charged a penalty of one night’s room rate, according to the article. “We’re making this change so we can provide you with a more consistent booking process and make more rooms available for when you need last-minute travel accommodations,” Hilton said in a statement. Hotels within large chains have varying cancellation policies, however, which means the rules won’t change for properties that already have more restrictive policies in place requiring a two-day or longer advance notice. The airline-inspired tactic will increase fee revenues for the two hotel companies.
