Freedom Rider Hank Thomas Part of the HR + Diversity Summit

7/12/2012 | The Scene
Hank Thomas has fought for civil rights his entire life. He was a member of the original Freedom Riders and was arrested 22 times for his active attempts at bringing equality to African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Thomas also received a Purple Heart for his bravery in the Vietnam War and continues to be a highly regarded civil leader and diversity advocate. He also happens to be in the hotel business.

Thomas is a Marriott hotel franchisee who owns four hotel properties—two Fairfield Inns and two TownePlace Suites. He is also president of Victoria Hospitality Properties Inc., which owns and operates Marriott Hotel franchisees, and vice president of Hayon Inc. and Hayon II Inc., which owns and operates McDonald's franchisees.

As part of the upcoming
HR + Diversity Summit, presented by Lodging Media in conjunction with Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration, Thomas will discuss the important role of diversity leadership in the hospitality industry and how minorities will shape the future of the hotel business.

He will also tell the audience his tales of the Civil Rights Movement and his efforts to overcome discrimination.

At one point in his career, Thomas owned and operated as many as seven restaurants in Atlanta, Ga. He will bring his dual experience in the restaurant industry and the hotel industry to the summit, held Sept. 5-7 in Boston, and offer attendees valuable lessons on how to succeed.

In addition to his business endeavors, Thomas is active in the Atlanta community and has served on the boards of the APEX Museum, the Butler Street YMCA, and other civic and service organizations since 1968. He is also a life member of the NAACP and an active fundraiser for the UNCF.
