Hilton Worldwide and Sundance Institute Announce Film Winners

1/15/2013 | The Scene
Over the past few years, hotel companies have made a big effort to reduce waste and encourage the use of sustainable practices and materials in properties all over the world. Hilton Worldwide is one of the front-runners in the industry's push to "go green." The company's LightStay program calculates sustainability performance impact across its global portfolio of hotels, and is used to improve the guest experience and drive economic returns for owners and operators.

Last year, Hilton Worldwide partnered with the Sundance Institute to launch the inaugural LightStay Sustainability Award, which was given out to documentaries that heightened sustainability awareness. The first awards were presented to The Island President and Solar Mamas.

Now, the award program is in its second year, and winners of the 2013 prizes have been announced by Hilton and the Sundance Institute. This year's big winner is the feature film Revolutionary Optimists, which will receive $22,500. The in-process category winner, Hungry; Studio H will receive $15,000 for honorable mention, and the short film Jungle Fish will receive $5,000.

“Filmmakers have an opportunity to share stories that can catalyze change and elevate dialogue around critical global issues,” said Christopher Corpuel, vice president, product management and sustainability, Hilton Worldwide. “The LightStay Sustainability Award recognizes these compelling documentary projects for inspiring solutions and highlighting the complexities around living in a resource-constrained world.”

The 2013 winners were chosen out of 1,500 feature-length documentaries and more than 5,000 short film entries submitted to the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program and Fund. The prizes will be presented at an invitation-only panel discussion with the film directors and film writer, David D’Arcy, during the 2013 Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, January 20th.
