McDonald's Pat Harris to Speak at the HR + Diversity Summit

7/10/2012 | The Scene
When it comes to developing and implementing diversity strategies on a global scale, Patricia (Pat) Harris, vice president and global chief diversity officer for McDonald's Corporation, reigns supreme. She began her career with McDonald's over 30 years ago and worked her way up the ranks from administrative assistant to her current leadership role, where she is responsible for putting diversity practices in place at the brand's 31,489 restaurants in 118 countries worldwide.

Harris will be a featured speaker at the HR & Diversity Summit, presented by Lodging Media in conjunction with Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration. At the three-day summit, held September 5-7, Harris will speak directly about McDonald's highly successful diversity ownership and franchising program and how the model can benefit other industries, particularly hotels.

Under her leadership, McDonald's has received countless awards and recognition for its diversity and inclusion efforts. Fortune Magazine named the company one of the "Top 50 Places for Minorities to Work," Black Enterprise Magazine listed McDonald's as one of the "Top 40 Companies for Diversity," and Worklife Matters presented the company with the "Disability Diversity Award."

Not only has Harris helped grow a diverse group of franchise owners and operators, but she is also responsible for helping McDonald's expand its supply network to reflect the company's diversity and inclusion philosophy. According to Black Enterprise Magazine, in the past five years, the company's purchases from African American suppliers has increased by 24.3 percent. Annually, the McDonald's U.S. system purchases more than 50 percent of its total food, distribution, and paper from minority and women-owned suppliers.

Pat Harris is considered an expert in the field of diversity and she will bring her unique viewpoints about increasing minority leadership in the hotel industry to the stage at this important inaugural event.
