Sofitel Cartagena Santa Clara Opens After Three-Year Renovation

2/12/2013
PARIS—Following three years of restoration, Sofitel Legend Cartagena Santa Clara opens its doors as the fourth property under the Sofitel Legend label, a collection of historical properties throughout the world. A former monastery built by the Clarist nuns in 1621, Sofitel Santa Clara is the first Sofitel Legend in South America.

The hotel features 122 refurbished guestrooms across the historical Colonial wing and the modernized Republican wing. With views of the Caribbean Sea, each room offers its own personality with white wash walls, natural wood ceilings and floors, soft neutral tones, and splashes of soft corals, mints, and turquoises.

The historical wing also hosts 17 suites, including the 1539 square foot Fernando Botero Suite, named in honor of the celebrated Colombian artist and featuring several of his works.

Situated in the former Clarist nuns' dining room, the property's restaurant, 1621, now offers gastronomic fare with a French flare and an extensive wine cellar. Guests can also enjoy El Coro Lounge Bar, offering signature cocktails, cigars, and live music on weekends, and the more casual El Claustro brasserie.

The So Spa at Sofitel Santa Clara offers a Hammam, Solarium, pool, fitness center, and dedicated tea area.

Before the remodeling, the suites at Santa Clara were a beautiful blend of the old and new. The rooms reflected the history of Cartagena, with exposed coral walls, beautiful wooden beams, and comfortable furnishings with an antique feel. The new rooms have absolutely no charm; they are harsh, cold, and sterile. The walls are plastered over and painted taupe, and even the wooden beams have been painted-something no one with any artistic sensibility would ever do. We had stayed here many times before, and when I saw what they had done I actually cried. If you want to come for the pool and patio, choose the least expensive rooms because the suites have nothing to offer. Before the remodeling, one could feel the history and charm of the ancient city in the rooms, but now you might as well be in LA or New York. What a shame.
