Jetsetter Enters the Same-Day Booking Business
The hotel industry is aware that advances in technology have made the mobile booking market a very viable way to sell rooms. And mobile travelers are using the ease and convenience of mobile devices to book rooms closer to their date of travel—even waiting until the same day. Same-day booking apps are not new to the market. Hotel Tonight, Orbitz Mobile Steals, and Priceline Tonight-Only Deals all let travelers score same-day deals in certain cities. But now, luxury flash sale site Jetsetter.com has gotten into the game with new Jetsetter Now prices.
Shaun Stewart, vice president of sales and operations for Jetsetter, says the company recognized the surge in last-minute bookings and created the same-day deals as a way to cater to its customers.
"Last minute bookings dominate mobile purchases, especially on the iPhone," he says. "Seventy-six percent of Jetsetter mobile bookings are within two weeks, 32 percent of which are within 7 days. Aggressively priced mobile-only sales see a big increase in same-day bookings."
Unlike many other same-day booking sites, Jetsetter makes its same-day bookings opaque—meaning the identity and exact location of the hotels are hidden until after booking and payment is completed. Jetsetter provides consumers with a brief description of the hotel and a member satisfaction rating, along with a “what to know” and ”what to love section” which ensures users can make an informed decisions based on travel preferences.
"For hotels, opaque distribution means revenue managers can provide competitive pricing based on their last minute availability, without revealing the name of the brand or hotel," says Stewart. "The same-day booking platform provides incremental revenue, without the risk of impacting existing business or training people to wait for the hotel to discount."
Participating hotels that wish to utilize Jetsetter's same-day service can locate the “same day” tab in Jetsetter’s partner portal and load the number of rooms and the lowest net rate the hotels are willing to accept for remaining inventory. The rooms and rates must be entered into the system by noon local time on the day they want to sell. Jetsetter reviews all submissions in each market and then prioritizes the most competitive. As inventory sells out, the next best offer will be promoted. All bookings and inventory are for run of house only, allowing room type flexibility upon check in.
"Jetsetter’s curators and senior management team speak to dozens of hotel partners each day," says Stewart. "We listened to their needs, but also their complaints about current same-day platforms. We wanted to provide a same-day platform that would benefit Jetsetter members, in addition to assisting our valuable Jetsetter partners."
Jetsetter Now sales launched for the first time today and will now be available through the Jetsetter app for iPhone and iPod.
