Modular Lodging: DROP Eco-Hotel

12/7/2012 | The Scene
Most of the time, when we think about a hotel room, we imagine a square room with four walls in a sky-high urban building or a sprawling resort near the ocean. But modular hotels and pop-up hotels are bucking tradition meeting certain needs for easy-to-assemble, temporary lodging.

One design group is thinking outside of the box with the new DROP Eco-Hotel concept. In-Tenta Creative Design Group has come up with the concept for an eco-friendly, removable hotel room that is meant to be installed in natural environments with very little disruption. It is composed of modular wooden and steel elements and the structure is elevated to avoid doing damage to the ground underneath.

The capsule-shaped hotel room features two dome-shaped windows that can open directly to the outside, and the ceiling of the pods feature a skylight to let natural light into the space. Although the room is not large in terms of square footage, it does feature enough room for a daybed, lounge area, toilet, and a shower.

Although DROP is not on the market just yet, producer Urban Square, a company that specializes in micro-architecture, has selected DROP to be part of its catalog for hotels. So, it seems like this modular room design will be available for eco-friendly hoteliers and developers in the near future.

We can imagine a lot of really innovative ways to use this type of modular unit. Do you think DROP will find success in the lodging industry?
