Redesigning the Budget Hotel Room
 Anyone who travels frequently and tries to keep expenses under control knows that budget hotels are a great place to check in for a cheap rate. While these types of hotels usually offer comfort and convenience, they rarely offer the innovative design associated with more expensive properties.
While some small-space, creative hotels, such as the Pod hotels in New York, are catching on in the United States, the United Kingdom is really experiencing a boom in budget hotels. Budget hotels account for one third of the new hotels being built in the country. And BD, an architecture paper based in the UK, believes that its time budget rooms received some designer treatment.

The publication recently launched a design competition called BD Small that focuses specifically on the guestroom space of budget hotels. Design and architecture firms submitted space-saving ideas that still pack a visual punch. The shortlist for the competition was revealed today and consists of twelve finalists. The winning design will be announced at the Sleep hotel conference in London on November 22 and featured in BD and Bdonline.
"This is a sector that's in desperate need of reinvention. Most budget hotel rooms are boring and purely functional spaces," said BD editor-in-chief and competition judge Amanda Baillieu. "The shortlisted entries are all very different but they share the same ambition - to create a really memorable experience."

The final designs range in both form and function. One configuration from Nicos Yiatros & Konstantinos Zaverdinos features a floating bed that gives the room a sense of airiness and light while floor-to-ceiling windows bring the city into the room with an overspill that takes the room out to the city. Another design by Coupdeville Architects uses simple moving parts to create a series of different arrangements to make the most of limited floor space. A sunken bath is covered by the sliding bed, designed along the lines of a stage set.
