Marriott Rolls Out Workspace on Demand Concept

1/11/2013 | The Scene
Back in September of last year, Marriott Hotels and Resorts launched a new workplace concept called Workspring at Marriott. The concept, designed by Steelcase, hopes to bring in more small business groups to Marriott hotels. Now, Marriott International is trying out a new concept called Workspace on Demand, which allows small groups to book meeting space in hotels whenever and wherever they need it while on-the-go.

Currently, the Workspace on Demand concept is being tested at hotels in the Washington, DC and San Francisco areas. It is a collaboration with LiquidSpace, a mobile/web app connecting people in search of flexible workspaces with venues providing workspaces.

According to research firm IDC, the number of mobile workers – those without a fixed office space – will increase to nearly 1.2 billion globally this year. And Workspace on Demand hopes to serve those workers by offering easy-to-book, affordable meeting space that offers all the functionality and convenience of an office setting.

In an announcement, Paul Cahill, senior vice president, Brand Management, Marriott Hotels & Resorts said: “Whether you work from home and need a place to meet a client in the neighborhood or you want a flexible space to meet and collaborate with company colleagues, we want to welcome you into our hotels and Greatroom lobbies. Younger workers are changing the work dynamic. They are mobile and global, living lives untethered to the traditional work environment, and we are evolving with them.”

Workspaces can be booked on the web or through a mobile app at more than 30 Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Renaissance Hotels and Courtyard by Marriott hotels. We think this is a really innovative idea and see it being a potentially big revenue driver for Marriott if this concept catches on. With the growing number of mobile workers, it seems like this collaboration between large hotel companies with ample meeting spaces, such as Marriott, and LiquidSpace is a no-brainer.
